When discussing child poverty, it’s not merely a theoretical concept for me.

I reflect on my mother and the lingering guilt she carries, how poverty impacts self-perception beyond just living conditions.

Watching me address poverty in Parliament, my mother conveys apologies, unjustly taking blame due to the indifferent politics of my upbringing.

Conservatives and Reform fail to grasp that poverty extends beyond financial status to encompass shame, stigma, and self-blame that endure over time.

Historically, governmental policies exacerbated this issue, like the two-child limit, diminishing support and implying certain children and families are less valued.

Today marks a significant shift as Labour abolishes the limit, uplifting nearly half a million children from poverty, including 3,000 in Bournemouth, predominantly from working families constrained by an unaccommodating system.

This action represents tangible progress in addressing living costs, prioritizing practical decisions that alleviate financial burdens for families and offer children a fairer start.

This move is part of a broader trend towards higher wages, reduced expenses, and increased assistance for essential family needs.

However, this progress faces a threat from the Conservatives and Reform, who aim to reinstate the two-child limit, jeopardizing the well-being of hundreds of thousands of children.

At a time when families are financially strained, these proposed policies would further disadvantage working individuals.

Their rhetoric echoes past sentiments of blaming struggling individuals and rationing support based on subjective notions of “deserving.”

I have personally experienced the consequences of such attitudes, witnessing parents unfairly blaming themselves and children growing up with limited opportunities burdened by societal judgments.

The removal of the two-child limit signifies a pivotal moment to combat child poverty rather than perpetuate it, demonstrating support for families without passing judgment.

Children do not choose their circumstances at birth, but politicians determine the type of society they construct.

The Labour government is unequivocal about its stance on this issue.
