Margaret Aspinall’s call for the implementation of a Hillsborough Law is rooted in her personal experience and carries significant importance.

The proposed Public Office (Accountability) Bill aims to establish a legal obligation for public authorities to operate with honesty and transparency during investigations, which is a necessary step to prevent future cover-ups, offer legal support to bereaved families, and hold accountable those who deceive the public.

This measure is not extreme but crucial. Families of the 97 victims of the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989 fought tirelessly for justice over many years, highlighting the need for such legislation.

Survivors deserve answers, and transparency is owed to the public. Recent correspondence and requests for testimony suggest unresolved issues persist.

Renouncing honors and retreating from the public eye cannot erase the past nor substitute for transparency. The repercussions of this scandal have damaged public trust significantly. Rebuilding trust requires openness, not withdrawal.
