Keir Starmer and Donald Trump recently had a phone conversation regarding the Strait of Hormuz plan, according to reports. The two leaders discussed the urgent need to facilitate the movement of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz following the Middle East ceasefire, as stated by a spokesperson from Downing Street.

Interestingly, the call took place shortly after Starmer criticized President Trump’s remarks and denounced Israel for its extensive attacks on Lebanon. The Prime Minister expressed disapproval of Tel Aviv’s ongoing bombardment, labeling it as “wrong,” which raised concerns about the stability of the temporary halt in bombing activities.

The Downing Street spokesperson mentioned that the Prime Minister engaged in a discussion with President Trump from Qatar, emphasizing the importance of restoring navigation freedom in the Strait of Hormuz. They also highlighted the UK’s efforts to collaborate with partners to devise a feasible plan for the region.

Both leaders acknowledged the current ceasefire situation and the agreement to reopen the Strait, signaling a transition to the next phase of finding a lasting resolution. They underscored the necessity of implementing a pragmatic strategy to resume shipping operations promptly and agreed to continue their dialogue in the near future.

In a separate statement earlier in the day, Starmer criticized Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric towards Tehran and his calls for the destruction of Iranian civilization. He emphasized that such language did not align with British values and principles.

The fragile truce between the US and Iran appears to be deteriorating as Israeli airstrikes intensify in Beirut while Iran asserts control over the Strait of Hormuz, casting doubts on the possibility of a sustainable peace agreement.

Tehran and Washington are projecting strength and claiming victories while gearing up for negotiations on a permanent deal, set to commence soon in Islamabad. U.S. Vice President JD Vance is expected to lead the American delegation.

Recent events in Lebanon, including the deadliest day since the conflict began with over 300 casualties due to Israeli strikes, have further complicated the situation. Disagreements persist regarding whether the ceasefire extends to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, prompting threats of “strong responses” from Iran if attacks on its ally persist.

Upcoming talks between Israel and Lebanon are anticipated in Washington next week, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu already expressing approval for direct negotiations. However, the Lebanese government has yet to publicly respond to the proposal. Netanyahu clarified that there is no ceasefire in place in Lebanon, indicating that Israeli operations against Hezbollah will continue.
