A renowned Dubai hotel is set to close its doors for a temporary period. The five-star Jumeirah Burj Al Arab in the UAE will undergo an 18-month renovation to enhance its iconic decor. The hotel’s decision for the closure did not directly reference the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East involving US-Israeli forces and Iran.
According to Middle East Eye (MEE), the unrest in the region, particularly Iran’s strikes on UAE and other Gulf states hosting US bases, has led to a decline in expat and tourist numbers. Since the conflict began, financial markets in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have suffered losses exceeding £88 billion, with over 18,400 flights canceled.
In a statement on its website, the hotel stated that the restoration project aims to refresh and upgrade its distinctive decor while maintaining its character. MEE also reported that the hotel experienced damage from debris resulting from an Iranian drone interception in March, affecting various locations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
The ongoing conflict and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have continued to impact tourism and flight operations due to rising jet fuel costs. As per the Express, Emirates recently announced a reduced flight schedule to over 100 destinations amid the fragile ceasefire declared by Iran and the US.
