King Charles has decided not to have an on-camera meeting with Donald Trump in the Oval Office, a space where many world leaders have had confrontations with the US President during visits to Washington DC.

Relations between the UK and the US are currently strained, leading Charles to opt for a private meeting with Trump during his upcoming four-day State Visit. By avoiding a public meeting in the Oval Office, the discussions between the two leaders will remain confidential and away from public scrutiny.

This decision follows a series of public clashes that other prominent world leaders have had with Trump in the Oval Office. Charles and Trump will initially meet privately over tea upon Charles’ arrival on April 27, followed by a one-on-one meeting the next day at The White House, without the presence of journalists or film crews.

During his visit, Charles is expected to address the “challenges” faced by the US and the UK in a scripted speech to 535 lawmakers in Congress, which will be broadcast on American television. Both leaders are also scheduled to deliver prepared speeches at a White House State Dinner.

The State Visit, scheduled for later this month, comes in the wake of Trump’s criticism of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s handling of the US conflict with Iran. Trump’s remarks expressing dissatisfaction with the UK’s response included comments comparing the situation unfavorably to dealing with Winston Churchill.

A spokesperson from Buckingham Palace emphasized that the visit aims to reaffirm and renew the special relationship between the two nations, enabling them to address challenges together. The spokesperson highlighted the enduring partnership between the US and the UK, which has withstood various presidencies and reigns and is expected to continue in the future.

Recent incidents involving world leaders like the presidents of Ukraine, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Japan have shown confrontations with Trump in the Oval Office. For instance, Ukrainian President Zelensky had a tense meeting with Trump in April 2025, characterized by a heated exchange.

In conclusion, the upcoming meeting between King Charles and President Trump is expected to be a pivotal moment in the diplomatic relations between the US and the UK, as both nations navigate through challenging times.
