A young man expressed disappointment after being turned down for a waste collection job with the local council on three occasions, despite completing a nine-month unpaid internship. Bryan Rowe, aged 21, revealed that he had applied twice to Southampton City Council but was initially rejected due to an error. Following a subsequent interview, he was once again unsuccessful in securing the position. Rowe, who has ADHD and myotonic dystrophy, a muscular condition, worked as a lorry loader during his internship from November 2024 to June 2025.

Despite being encouraged to apply for roles post-internship, Rowe faced repeated rejections. The council acknowledged an error in the second rejection email, attributing it to misinformation dissemination. Described as always enthusiastic and competent during his internship, Rowe had dreamt of being a waste collector since childhood.

Upon the third rejection, Rowe’s mother, Claire Rowe, criticized the decision as harsh and unjust. She believed that the council should have straightforwardly declined her son’s application if they deemed him unsuitable for the job. Frustrated by the situation, she emphasized the emotional toll on her son, expressing disbelief at the repeated setbacks.

In response, a spokesperson for Southampton City Council stated that while they had received numerous applications for the role, they could not comment on individual cases. They assured that the recruitment process adhered to council standards and wished all unsuccessful candidates well in their future pursuits. Rowe, reflecting on the rejections, shared his disappointment and self-doubt, questioning his abilities after investing time in the internship.

Claire Rowe highlighted her son’s dedication and punctuality during the unpaid period, questioning the challenge of gaining sufficient experience for employment opportunities. She lodged a formal complaint with the council, prompting a review of their recruitment procedures.
