Ahead of the upcoming Easter holidays, British travelers are being cautioned about a frequent passport error that could result in being denied boarding at the airport.

As the Easter half-term approaches, a significant number of vacationers are anticipated to travel abroad, either for a sunny beach vacation or a delightful city break. With airports expected to experience higher traffic levels during the peak travel period, it is essential for Brits to adequately prepare before embarking on their journeys.

One of the primary blunders made by travelers is neglecting to meticulously verify their passports before booking a trip or heading to the airport. This oversight could lead to individuals being refused entry at the airport, ultimately causing them to miss their vacation and potentially lose out on a refund.

To assist holidaymakers in avoiding passport mishaps, travel specialist Jamie Fraser from Wild Packs has issued a caution regarding passport damage. He highlighted that individuals are denied boarding annually due to physically damaged passports.

This damage can encompass torn pages, water harm, loose covers, or any other factors that may obscure the passport’s personal information. In such instances, Jamie emphasized that the passport could be rendered invalid, preventing the traveler from flying.

Even minor damage can pose issues. Normal wear and tear can become problematic when passing through automated scanners or border control at the airport.

Over time, passports can deteriorate from being stowed in backpacks, handled at airports, and taken on various journeys. Therefore, whether planning a trip for the Easter holidays or later in the year, it is advisable to assess the passport’s condition before traveling.

Jamie also advised travelers to check both the issue date and expiry date of their passports. Following a post-Brexit regulation for travel to most European nations, UK passports must have been issued within a decade of the arrival date.

Another crucial aspect to confirm is the presence of a blank page at the end of the passport for necessary stamps or visas. The expert noted that individuals with passports full of stamps from previous trips may encounter difficulties at the border if there are insufficient blank pages available.

If encountering passport issues, individuals can renew or replace their passports through the government website. However, it is advisable to complete this process well in advance of the flight departure, as Jamie cautioned that fast-track passport services in the UK are not always guaranteed, with limited appointments during peak travel periods.

Furthermore, expedited services are pricier compared to renewing passports in advance. Online passport renewal or replacement costs £94.50, or £107 when using a paper application. While the process typically takes around three weeks, delays can occur, underscoring the importance of initiating this process promptly to mitigate travel complications.
