There are moments in my role that carry a sense of formality – the usual, planned, and procedural occurrences. However, as I step up to the dispatch box today to recite the names of every woman believed to have been killed by a man in the past year, the ceremonial aspect of the job fades away. Reciting these names annually sheds light on the harsh reality faced by women in our nation and worldwide on a daily basis. It is a day that never becomes easier. By commemorating these women in this manner, I am struck by the immense responsibility I bear.

Each name symbolizes the collective letdown of our Parliament, institutions, and society in safeguarding women from harm. Today, as I rise, not just as a Minister or MP, but also as one of a historic 265 women MPs, we unite to observe International Women’s Day. This moment prompts a reflection on the remarkable achievements of women across various domains globally.

This day is chosen precisely because how can we celebrate achievements of women worldwide without acknowledging the harsh realities faced by many. Many prefer to keep this reality concealed, but merely praising ourselves on this day while women are facing violence is not progress; it’s a facade.

This moment holds significant meaning for me, not just for honoring lives tragically cut short, but for what it signifies about our country and whose safety we prioritize. However, this is not about me. This moment belongs to these women and all women and girls enduring threats, abuse, and harassment, often paying with their lives. Indeed, this is the most challenging day of the year.

Though my voice falters, tears are held back, and the emotional weight of the day is immense, I will persist in honoring women in this manner. The fight must continue so that women and girls feel secure in their homes, on the streets, and at work.

This is why we are mobilizing the full strength of the state to reduce violence against women and girls by half in a decade. This is not just another governmental policy; it’s a vital support system. Placing the protection of women and girls at the core of all our actions is the true way to honor these women, and I will not cease there.

I am committed to doing whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of women and girls in this country.
