Pope Leo XIV reportedly strategized on how to address Donald Trump’s social media outbursts before the President’s controversial remarks against the pontiff, according to a Vatican expert interviewed by The Mirror.

President Trump faced backlash for labeling the Pope as “weak” in response to the pontiff’s criticism of his approach to the Iran conflict. Pope Leo had previously condemned Trump’s aggressive language prior to a potential truce, where Trump had threatened to annihilate the Iranian civilization.

The Vatican, well-versed in handling challenging situations, likely anticipated confrontational scenarios with Trump and had clear strategies in place, as stated by Dr. Miles Pattenden, a Catholic Church historian specializing in Pope Leo’s era. The Vatican aims to maintain the Pope’s moral authority by avoiding direct conflicts with political leaders and refraining from escalating tensions further.

While clashes between world leaders and the Pope are not uncommon, Trump’s recent criticism marks a notable departure and could impact his support among crucial voting demographics, including Catholic voters. Dr. Pattenden emphasized the potential risks for Trump in alienating Catholic supporters by targeting the Pope, especially given the emotional attachment many Catholics have to the pontiff.

Despite winning a majority of Catholic votes in his re-election bid in 2024, Trump’s behavior, including his messianic persona and controversial actions like sharing an AI-generated Jesus image, may strain his relationships with other Christian groups.

Pope Leo has been cautious in publicly criticizing secular leaders’ foreign policies, unlike his predecessor Pope Francis, who was more outspoken in condemning global figures. However, Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric prompted the Pope to draw a “red line,” asserting his moral stance and challenging direct governmental criticisms.

During a recent diplomatic engagement in Africa, Pope Leo addressed the importance of resisting the influence of the wealthy elite, following Trump’s tirade. He urged Cameroon’s government to combat corruption and seek peace and justice, highlighting the need to end the Anglophone conflict in the country.

Overall, the Pope’s response to Trump’s remarks underscores his commitment to upholding moral values and advocating for social justice, even in the face of political tensions.
