Keir Starmer is scheduled to address the media today following his leadership of an urgent COBRA meeting regarding the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The Prime Minister is set to deliver an update at 10 am on the government’s efforts to assist families in managing living costs amidst the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran. The prolonged conflict, now in its fifth week, has significantly driven up global energy prices and raised concerns about potential petrol shortages.
The Iranian blockade of the critical shipping route, the Strait of Hormuz, could impact food supplies due to disruptions in fertilizer shipments from Gulf countries. Despite this, the government has reassured the public that there are currently no immediate concerns regarding petrol supplies and individuals should continue refueling as usual.
This development follows Mr. Starmer convening his top ministers in Whitehall for a COBRA meeting on Tuesday evening to address the swiftly evolving situation in the region. Shortly before this meeting, the unpredictable US President Donald Trump distanced himself from the conflict, urging the UK and other allies to secure their own oil supply.
Downing Street confirmed that the Prime Minister is actively collaborating with allies to advocate for de-escalation in the Middle East conflict, emphasizing that this approach is crucial for alleviating price pressures at home.
Additionally, the Prime Minister is expected to highlight cost-of-living measures outlined in November’s Budget that are taking effect today. These measures include wage increases for millions of minimum-wage workers, a temporary reduction in the energy price cap by an average of £117 until June, and a freeze on prescription charges.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, Mr. Starmer affirmed his government’s commitment to safeguarding the British populace amid global uncertainties, assuring citizens of ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of the Iran conflict and rising living costs.
He emphasized the government’s dedication to further reducing expenses by advocating for de-escalation in the Middle East and the re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz as a means to alleviate financial burdens on families.
