The HM Passport Office is cautioning British citizens as the busy travel season approaches. With Easter holidays nearing and summer vacation plans in motion, many travelers will be heading abroad during a peak travel period. To avoid any travel disruptions, Brits are being reminded to verify the validity of their passports to prevent potential airport rejections.

In a recent announcement, the HM Passport Office emphasized the importance of checking passport details before any upcoming trips. A post on their platform urged travelers to “check your passport now” and provided a link to the government website where passport renewals, replacements, or updates can be processed online.

When planning trips to popular European destinations like France, Spain, or Greece, it is crucial to ensure that your passport meets post-Brexit regulations. UK passports intended for travel to the European Union or Schengen countries must have been issued within the last 10 years and remain valid for at least 3 months after the return date. Additionally, countries such as Australia, China, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and India require passports to have at least 6 months of validity upon arrival.

Travel expert Jamie Fraser from Wild Packs highlighted that even general wear and tear on a passport can cause issues at automated scanners or border controls. It is essential to have a well-maintained passport or apply for a replacement if needed. Furthermore, travelers should ensure there is a blank page at the back of their passport for necessary stamps or visas to avoid entry problems at borders due to insufficient space.

For those requiring passport renewal or replacement, applications can be submitted through the government website. However, it is advised to initiate the process well in advance, as it typically takes around three weeks or longer. While expedited passport services are available, they are not always guaranteed, especially during peak travel times. The HM Passport Office also emphasized that new passports will not retain the same number as the old ones.

To renew or replace a standard passport online, the fee is £94.50, or £107 for a paper application. Similarly, a child’s passport costs £61.50 online or £74 via post.
