A former prominent jockey, Luke Tarrant, is currently in custody facing three charges related to armed robbery. Tarrant, who is already serving a 12-month disqualification from racing due to a previous offense, was denied bail during his recent court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia.
The charges against Tarrant include three counts of armed robbery, entering premises with intent to commit a serious offense, and possession of illegal drugs. The offense of robbery carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison, with the potential for a life sentence in cases involving armed robbery, violence, or collaboration with others.
Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19. The 31-year-old jockey, who has achieved notable success in his career with 502 wins, including three Group race victories, notably winning the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2015.
In 2020, Tarrant was banned for six months after confessing to physically assaulting another jockey in the weighing room. Additionally, in October of the previous year, he was disqualified for one year for failing to cooperate with a stewards’ inquiry into the suspected falsification of health assessment forms for licensing.
The case was referred to Queensland’s Racing Integrity Commission, which directed Tarrant to respond, but he did not provide any plea or submissions within the given timeframe. Consequently, a panel from the Commission ruled that Tarrant’s actions undermined the integrity of the system and imposed a 12-month disqualification starting from October 8, 2025, to October 8, 2026.
