An unsuspecting visitor at a popular tourist beach was shocked to discover a hefty £1,500 charge for a kebab. The incident took place on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where a scammer, along with an accomplice, manipulated a payment terminal to overcharge the victim. The tourist, a British national, unknowingly paid £1,480 for the kebab, which should have cost only £15. Authorities reported that the payment machine had been tampered with to deceive the victim.

This occurrence is part of a trend where scammers target tourists on Brazilian beaches. The police in Brazil apprehended a criminal involved in fraudulent activities against a British tourist in Copacabana. The individual was part of an organized scheme that preyed on foreigners, particularly in popular areas like Copacabana and Ipanema.

The head of Rio’s tourist police, Patricia Alemany, stated that efforts are being made to apprehend individuals attempting to deceive tourists for financial gain. She emphasized the lack of oversight on beach vendors, creating an environment conducive to such crimes.

In separate incidents, another woman from Argentina was charged nearly £3,000 for corn on the cob, and a tourist from Colombia was billed around £400 for a caipirinha cocktail. These scams add to the concerns of tourists falling victim to various fraudulent schemes in Brazil.

Notably, British tourists are viewed as vulnerable targets due to their unfamiliarity with the surroundings, possession of valuables, and lack of awareness about potential dangers. Recent cases, including the “Goodnight Cinderella” spike scams, highlight the risks faced by tourists in Brazil, where criminals exploit unsuspecting individuals for theft.

One British traveler shared his experience of being drugged and robbed after consuming a drink offered by strangers. These incidents underscore the importance of vigilance and caution while visiting tourist destinations known for such criminal activities.
