Keir Starmer is scheduled to travel to the Middle East on Wednesday to engage in discussions with Gulf leaders regarding diplomatic initiatives aimed at backing a two-week ceasefire.

The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the recent developments where Donald Trump decided to call off potential strikes on civilian structures in Iran. Trump’s decision was contingent upon allowing shipping operations through the Strait of Hormuz during a two-week ceasefire.

In response, the PM voiced support for the ceasefire agreement, emphasizing the need for collective efforts with partners to bolster and maintain the ceasefire, convert it into a lasting accord, and resume activity in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump refrained from carrying out strikes on Iran’s power facilities and bridges shortly before his self-imposed deadline. Following Tehran’s proposal of a ten-point plan deemed conducive for negotiations, Trump altered his stance, prompted by a mediation request from Pakistan.

During his visit to the region, Starmer will affirm the UK government’s commitment to de-escalation and engage in talks to permanently reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Discussions will revolve around practical strategies to reinstate free navigation along this critical maritime route, building on positive developments stemming from the ceasefire.

It is anticipated that the PM will meet with British and local personnel during his visit to express gratitude for their courageous efforts in safeguarding national and allied interests in the region.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that UK forces intercepted over 110 drone attacks in the area, with the RAF conducting more than 1600 hours of defensive operations.

Minister Sarah Jones highlighted the PM’s visit to the Gulf as an opportunity to witness defensive measures firsthand and play a pivotal role in ensuring the longevity of the ceasefire agreement.

Starmer’s trip follows a recent gathering of over 40 nations convened by the UK to kickstart plans for reopening the crucial maritime passage. Additionally, a military planning session was hosted by the UK on Tuesday.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper engaged in discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s effective blockade of the strait, a passage critical for global oil transit, has led to a surge in oil prices worldwide.

Cooper commended the ceasefire agreement but urged for a swift end to hostilities in Lebanon, emphasizing the importance of resolving the conflict promptly to safeguard security interests and mitigate economic impacts.

The UK’s stance on de-escalation and the reopening of the Strait remains unwavering. Collaborative efforts with the shipping, insurance, and energy sectors are ongoing to restore confidence in the strait’s safety and functionality. Iran is urged to cease all disruptive activities in the strait immediately.

Efforts are underway to ensure that proposed talks result in a comprehensive resolution, preventing future threats to the strait and neighboring nations. The UK is committed to supporting the ceasefire, advancing negotiation progress, and upholding security and stability in the region while safeguarding global navigation freedom.
