British armed forces successfully prevented Russian submarines from spying on crucial undersea cables during a period when global attention was focused on the Iran situation, as per the Defence Secretary’s announcement. John Healey exposed a clandestine Russian scheme to surveil vital infrastructure in the north Atlantic, cautioning Vladimir Putin that their activities were being monitored. The Navy mobilized various assets, including a Type 23 frigate, helicopters, and personnel, in a month-long operation to monitor the Russian Akula class nuclear-powered attack submarine and two spy vessels.

To deter potential threats to the undersea cables, the military deployed sonobuoys, RAF aircraft, and received support from allies like Norway. During a press conference, Mr. Healey made it clear to the Russian President that any attempts to harm the cables would face severe repercussions. He emphasized that despite the focus on the Middle East crisis, Russia remained the primary threat to the UK. Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding British interests and allies, highlighting the importance of the robust Armed Forces.

Recent events revealed a Russian attack submarine entering international waters in the High North, prompting continuous monitoring by British forces. Concerns over threats to undersea infrastructure led to the Ministry of Defence releasing satellite images of Russia’s naval base in the High North. Despite the increased Russian naval presence near UK waters, British defenses have remained vigilant, with a notable rise in Russian vessels over the past two years.

Acknowledging the impact of UK actions on Russian activities, Mr. Healey mentioned the redirection of shadow fleet tankers as evidence of their efforts to counter illegal actions. The Defence Secretary stressed the importance of ongoing efforts with allied nations to apply pressure on illicit activities. Amidst fallout from the Iran crisis, Mr. Healey defended the strategic deployment of military assets, emphasizing the need to prioritize defense against unseen threats.

Addressing criticisms from US President Donald Trump, Mr. Healey emphasized the government’s actions over words and rejected derogatory remarks about UK aircraft carriers. He refrained from commenting on social media posts and instead highlighted US commitment to NATO while urging European nations to enhance their contributions to the alliance.
