The snooker community gathered to honor the memory of the late John Virgo in a touching church service. Known affectionately as JV, Virgo was commemorated during a heartfelt ceremony at Sheffield Cathedral nearly two months after his passing at the age of 79 in Spain.
Renowned snooker players such as Stephen Hendry, Steve Davis, Jimmy White, Dennis Taylor, John Parrott, and Ken Doherty attended the event, joined by Virgo’s family, including his widow Rosie Ries and his adult children Gary and Brook-Leah. Reflecting on Virgo’s impact, six-time world champion Davis expressed deep sorrow at his loss, highlighting Virgo’s unique charm and wit that endeared him to many.
Bishop of Sheffield Pete Wilcox presided over the service, featuring a choir performance of hymns and songs, including a rendition of the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.” Taylor, Hendry, Parrott, and Doherty shared heartfelt memories of Virgo, with Parrott acknowledging his friend’s invaluable contribution to the sport and describing him as irreplaceable. Doherty emphasized Virgo’s profound influence on snooker and their personal bond.
Hendry recounted his admiration for Virgo’s commentary, reminiscing about their collaboration and expressing the sport’s collective loss. Virgo’s son, Gary, delivered a poignant eulogy, celebrating his father’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a prominent figure in snooker and television. The service also featured readings and tributes from other snooker personalities, illustrating Virgo’s enduring legacy in the sport.
The ceremony concluded with a reception at Sheffield Town Hall, coinciding with the upcoming snooker world championship. Attendees, including fans and former and current snooker stars, paid their respects to Virgo, acknowledging his significant contributions to the sport and his warm personality.
