Sainsbury’s has stirred up controversy by raising the minimum spend required for its standard home delivery service. Currently set at £40 for delivery pass holders, the new minimum spend will be £50 starting from April 7. Customers failing to meet the £50 threshold will incur a delivery fee of £7.50, up from the current fee of £7.

For those with a delivery pass, Sainsbury’s offers various subscription options, including £7.50 monthly, £43 for six months, or £80 for a year for an anytime delivery pass. Additionally, a midweek pass is available at £4 per month or £40 annually.

Customers without a delivery pass must pay a delivery fee if their order exceeds £50, ranging from £1 to £5.50 depending on the delivery time slot.

The increase in minimum spend has sparked backlash among shoppers, with many expressing their frustration on social media. Sainsbury’s confirmed the change in an email to customers, explaining that the adjustment reflects the rising costs associated with providing the service while aiming to maintain affordability and accessibility for online shoppers. A company spokesperson emphasized the importance of adapting to ensure simplicity and affordability for customers, highlighting options like the Delivery Pass and Click & Collect to help mitigate costs.
