The tragic incident in Louisiana where eight children were fatally shot has now seen the victims officially identified. The perpetrator, Shamar Elkins, a 31-year-old army veteran, reportedly carried out the shootings at three locations in Shreveport early in the morning. The Shreveport Police Department revealed that the crime scene spanned multiple properties in the Cedar Grove area, with Elkins attempting a carjacking before being fatally shot by law enforcement.
The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office disclosed the names of the seven child siblings and a cousin who lost their lives in the senseless attack. The victims, aged between 3 and 11, were identified by their mothers. The children, three boys and five girls, were named as Jayla Elkins, Shayla Elkins, Kayla Pugh, Layla Pugh, Markaydon Pugh, Sariahh Snow, Khedarrion Snow, and Braylon Snow.
Autopsies have been scheduled for the victims, as investigations continue. Additionally, it was revealed that seven children were found deceased inside a residence, while one child was tragically discovered on the roof, presumably attempting to escape the violence.
Local representatives, including State Rep. Tammy Phelps, expressed shock at the tragic events, with some children reportedly trying to flee during the ordeal. Two women who were injured in the incident remain in critical condition.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and US House Speaker Mike Johnson extended their condolences and commended law enforcement for their swift response to the tragedy. The motive behind the violence remains unclear, with authorities indicating that the incident appears to be a domestic-related matter.
This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in the US since January 2024. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and the community during this difficult time.
