Wu Yize’s father made significant sacrifices to support his son’s snooker career, including selling their family home and closing his business. This investment paid off as Wu, aged 22, emerged victorious in a thrilling final against Shaun Murphy at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

The intense match, which went to a 35th-frame decider, marked a historic moment in the tournament, propelling Wu to become the tournament’s second youngest champion. Along with the prestigious title, Wu also secured a substantial £500,000 prize.

Following in the footsteps of Zhao Xintong’s success in 2025, Wu became the second consecutive Chinese player to claim the world title. His father’s sacrifices, such as selling their home in Lanzhou and shutting down his antique shop to support Wu’s journey, were essential to his achievement.

During the emotional trophy ceremony, Wu expressed gratitude to his parents, calling them the “true champions” and acknowledging their unwavering support throughout his career. His parents were visibly moved by his words.

Wu’s victory has sparked a surge in snooker’s popularity in China, with online platforms buzzing with excitement over his win. Social media was flooded with messages of congratulations from fans and fellow Chinese snooker stars, highlighting the growing influence of Chinese players in the sport.

From training at the Dongguan Billiards Association to standing proud with the Chinese flag draped over his shoulders, Wu’s journey from aspiring youngster to world champion symbolizes the flourishing era of Chinese snooker talent. His remarkable achievement has garnered praise from various quarters, including official recognition from the Communist Party newspaper, People’s Daily.
