A young British lawyer passed away shortly after undergoing Brazilian butt lift and liposuction surgeries overseas due to feeling pressured to maintain a slim appearance in the legal field, an inquest revealed.
Diarra Brown, aged 28, lost her life on October 26, 2021, following a four-hour procedure at a private clinic in Turkey. Reports from the inquest detailed how she had taken out a significant £10,000 loan to cover multiple cosmetic treatments at the Private Memorial Hospital in Bahcelievler, Turkey, which included a Brazilian butt lift, liposuction, and an arm lift.
The lawyer had decided to undergo these procedures after facing ridicule for her weight, aiming to boost her confidence by transforming her appearance. Following the surgeries, Diarra successfully dropped eight dress sizes, going from a size 18 to a size 10. However, she started experiencing discomfort mere hours after the operation on October 22.
Complaining of feeling cold, sore, bruised, and in intense pain, the 28-year-old from Wolverhampton, West Midlands, sought medical attention. The surgical team led by Dr. Sevket Gokhan Beyhan assured her family that such symptoms were common post-operation and would subside with time.
In a statement, Diarra’s mother, Daisy Brown, recounted, “The surgeon explained that these symptoms were typical for someone recovering from anesthesia. Diarra was advised to eat and drink as much as possible and move around the room regularly.”
Despite efforts to walk, Diarra struggled due to excruciating pain and swelling in her feet. She returned to the hospital the next day for a check-up, where her condition deteriorated rapidly. Despite exhibiting severe symptoms like sweating, high temperature, breathlessness, and lethargy, she was sent back to her hotel while her mother was reassured by medical staff.
Unfortunately, Diarra’s health worsened, leading to a suspected cardiac arrest. Three days after the surgery, she tragically succumbed, with sepsis being identified as the probable cause of death during the inquest.
Dr. Vanya Gant, a consultant specializing in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases at University College London Hospitals, after reviewing Diarra’s medical records and post-mortem examination, concluded that she had developed uncontrolled septic shock.
According to a statement read by assistant coroner Kelly Dixon, Mrs. Brown highlighted the societal pressure Diarra felt to maintain a slim physique in her legal profession. She also mentioned that Diarra sought out multiple surgeries simultaneously in Turkey to complete her weight loss journey, emphasizing that she didn’t plan for any further procedures beyond that point.
The inquest is ongoing as more details surrounding the circumstances leading to Diarra’s tragic demise are being uncovered.
