LISTEN | FRONT BURNER:

Over the weekend, Israeli airstrikes led to the deaths of at least 11 individuals in southern Lebanon, as reported by the country’s health ministry. This incident marked the most fatal attack since a fragile ceasefire agreement was established in June to cease hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, despite ongoing assaults.

Apart from the aerial bombings and drone strikes, inhabitants and rescue personnel in the area have accused Israeli military units of purposefully igniting wildfires that have been devastating homes, woodlands, and olive orchards in the conflict-ridden region.

This situation has instilled worry among the local populace regarding their ability to remain in the area and the prospects of the hundreds of thousands displaced by the conflict ever being able to return.

Will Christou, a correspondent for The Guardian stationed in Beirut, has been investigating the fires and the broader Israeli military activities in southern Lebanon.

Correction: A previous version of this report incorrectly stated that a memorandum of understanding was signed in June 2026 involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. In reality, Israel was not a participant in that agreement. The report has been rectified.
