Canada will have its first chance to make an impact at the Eurovision Song Contest. The country must decide between following Céline Dion’s successful 1988 ballad path or embracing Eurovision’s quirky style, like Greece’s recent big orange cat performance. The selection of Canada’s representative for this global event is currently open for applications.

While the competition is open to all, CBC/Radio-Canada seeks experienced performers. Three potential contenders have already emerged: Rêve, a Montreal artist and 2023 Juno Dance Recording of the Year winner; Talk, a breakthrough artist with a Juno win in 2024; and bbno$, a two-time Fan Choice Juno recipient.

To qualify, Eurovision hopefuls must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents aged 18 or older by May 1, 2027, with the ability to travel internationally and pass background checks. Applicants must submit performance videos and share their Eurovision passion. Strong vocal abilities in both official languages are essential.

The selection process involves a shortlist determined by CBC/Radio-Canada after the application deadline of September 9. Established artists with a digital presence and European fan base are favored for the inaugural year. The public will vote for their preferred artist from the shortlist, combined with a jury vote to finalize Canada’s representative.

The chosen artist will play a significant role in shaping the Eurovision song. The delegation is engaging with established songwriters this year, with plans to involve newcomers in the future. The selected artist will be busy preparing from the shortlist announcement until the Grand Final in May, involving songwriting, music video production, and performance preparation. Compensation will be provided, but the exposure from Eurovision is considered invaluable.
