Most people anticipate finding good deals when they go shopping at local stores or food stalls. However, during my weekend shopping trip, I encountered an unexpected surprise.
Being a resident of Portsmouth, Gunwharf Quays is the go-to shopping destination due to the decline of the high street. This waterfront designer outlet boasts a selection of over 90 outlet stores offering discounts of up to 60% off retail prices, featuring renowned brands like Polo Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Nike, Adidas, Mulberry, and Kate Spade.
Apart from the shops, Gunwharf Quays also hosts more than 30 restaurants and cafes, including popular establishments like Wagamama, Nando’s, Brasserie Blanc, Giggling Squid, and Loch Fyne.
Visitors can also explore the iconic Spinnaker Tower, a 170-meter tall landmark offering breathtaking views of the Solent and Isle of Wight. Additionally, there is a 14-screen Vue Cinema, a 26-lane Hollywood Bowl, a Grosvenor Casino, and the Aspex contemporary art gallery to enjoy.
Activities such as powerboat rides, harbor tours, and leisurely strolls along the marina to admire visiting yachts are also available for visitors to partake in.
With approximately 7.3 million annual visitors, Gunwharf remains the top attraction in Portsmouth, with nearly 65% of all city visitors making a stop there by 2025.
Given its popularity, many brands choose to showcase their products at Gunwharf Quays. One such brand is Dr Pepper, which recently promoted their new limited-edition flavor ‘Cream Swirl.’ During my visit last Sunday, I was surprised to see a person dressed as a giant Dr Pepper can interacting with customers.
In a peculiar marketing move, there was also a man on a human hamster wheel with the slogan ‘Do you dare to cream?’ above it. The whole display felt surreal and garnered attention from onlookers who couldn’t resist capturing the unusual sight.
Although the marketing tactics may have been unconventional, they seemed to have achieved their goal as people were quick to share the experience on platforms like TikTok.
The new ‘Cream Swirl’ flavor, launched in the UK on February 23, 2026, combines the classic 23-flavor taste of Dr Pepper with a creamy twist and is set to be available until February 2027. The product is now stocked in major supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons.
Perhaps supporting this new flavor will ensure its success and spare the person in the Dr Pepper suit from further mall appearances.
