An Irish amateur rider has accused prominent British jockey Nico de Boinville of directing a racially abusive comment at him during a tumultuous start to the Turners Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. The incident occurred as the riders maneuvered for position among the 21-horse field, resulting in two false starts before the race officially commenced. De Boinville ultimately finished second on Act Of Innocence, while Queally placed fifth aboard I’ll Sort That.

Following the race, Queally expressed his displeasure, stating that being subjected to abuse by De Boinville was unkind, especially considering his amateur status and the presence of his family. De Boinville responded by suggesting that Queally reflect on his own actions.

During a stewards’ inquiry, it was revealed that Queally, along with other riders, had contributed to the false starts by not approaching the starting line properly. As a result, Queally and another rider received suspensions for their misconduct. Queally also lodged a complaint about an incident involving De Boinville, alleging that the latter used offensive language towards him during a televised interview.

Queally later clarified that the comment made by De Boinville was of a racial nature and reported the incident to the British Horseracing Authority stewards for further investigation. De Boinville declined to comment when contacted about the accusation.

The stewards have adjourned the matter to gather additional evidence following initial statements from Queally and De Boinville.
