London Mayor Sadiq Khan has strongly criticized President Donald Trump for his aggressive threats towards Iran, labeling them as unnecessarily offensive. Khan drew parallels between the potential unlawful actions of the US and Israel in the Middle East to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing the need to condemn such actions consistently.
The Labour politician, known for his ongoing feud with Trump, condemned the US President’s alarming statement that “a whole civilization will die” unless Tehran complied with his demands. Trump later backed down following a last-minute ceasefire agreement.
Expressing his thoughts on Trump’s rhetoric, Khan stated that it was disrespectful for the leader of a free nation to speak in such terms about a civilization. He highlighted the importance of a more diplomatic and inclusive approach to achieve a lasting ceasefire, especially when dealing with followers of Islam.
Khan also called for scrutiny of joint US and Israeli actions in the region, questioning the legality of attacks on civilian infrastructure. He stressed the necessity of supporting allies in the Middle East while advocating for permanent ceasefires in Lebanon and Iran to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
In a separate development, Keir Starmer and other world leaders have urged Israel to halt its assault on Lebanon and called for a lasting peace following the US-Iran ceasefire agreement. Despite the ceasefire, Israel has continued its attacks on Lebanon in a conflict with Hezbollah, a militant group backed by Iran.
