Fashion accessories retailer Claires has completed the closure of its 154 stores in the UK and Ireland, resulting in approximately 1,300 job losses, according to administrators. Kroll, the administrators, confirmed that all remaining stores under the chain have stopped operating, and employees have been informed of their redundancy. However, concession outlets and the European stores are still operational at present.
Kroll stated that as of April 27th, all standalone Claire’s stores in the UK and Ireland have ceased operations, with employees being notified of their redundancy. Discussions are ongoing with a potential interested party who is considering new leases for some of the locations.
Last September, Mayfair financiers Modella Capital acquired 156 Claire’s stores in the UK and Ireland after taking over WH Smith’s high street arm. Despite acknowledging that the acquisition would lead to some store closures and job cuts, Modella claimed it had the potential to save more than 1,000 jobs in the UK and Ireland.
In January of this year, the UK branch of Claire’s went into administration, just a few months after the acquisition. Modella Capital attributed the collapse to challenging retail conditions exacerbated by governmental policies, affecting businesses like Claire’s in the UK.
Concerns are also rising for TJ Jones, formerly known as the WH Smith high street business, amidst reports of an upcoming restructuring that may involve significant store closures.
The closure of the 154 stores does not impact Claire’s 356 concessions, which include locations within Asda stores and its headquarters.
Fashion expert Priya Raj highlighted a shift in consumer preferences away from the traditional colorful jewelry offered by Claire’s, particularly among teens who now look to social media for fashion inspiration rather than physical retail destinations. The trend is towards minimalistic and curated jewelry styles, diverging from Claire’s signature youthful designs.
Recent reports indicate the closure of several Claire’s stores in various locations, including Cheshire Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Stockport, Watford, and Bangor.
