Counter-terror authorities are spearheading an inquiry into an arson incident in London. Metropolitan Police officers responded to reports of a disturbance in Hendon late on Friday night. A man was observed approaching a line of shops carrying a plastic bag containing three bottles filled with fluid, which he attempted to ignite next to the building. Fortunately, the bottles did not fully catch fire, resulting in only minor damage to the shopfront with no reported injuries. The suspect fled the scene.

Although Counter Terrorism Policing London is leading the investigation, supported by officers from the North West Command Area, the Metropolitan Police clarified that the incident is not classified as a terrorist act. The authorities are maintaining an open stance on the motive behind the attack, and no arrests have been made at this point.

Commander Helen Flanagan of Counter Terrorism Policing London stated that while the recent arson is not directly linked to other incidents in the North West London area or the previous month’s arson in Golders Green, similarities between the attacks have led to Counter Terrorism officers taking charge of the investigation. Flanagan urged individuals with relevant information or footage to contact the police promptly to aid in their inquiries.

Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, overseeing policing in the region, acknowledged the concerns within the community following the incident in Golders Green. Williams assured that local officers are collaborating closely with Counter Terrorism Policing to support the ongoing investigation, resulting in an increased police presence in the area. Enhanced police patrols and vigilance have been implemented since the previous attack to reassure the community and deter potential offenders. This includes the deployment of armed police patrols and officers trained under Project Servator to identify individuals planning criminal activities.
