Barclays has made public its decision to shut down the Barclaycard website, instructing customers to transition to using a mobile app instead. The website closure is scheduled for June 10, with Barclays attributing the move to the increasing preference of customers for the app in handling day-to-day banking activities. The banking institution has assured customers that the Barclays website will eventually support online Barclaycard services. Currently, Barclaycard serves over five million customer accounts in the UK.

Notably, a communication sent to customers via Reddit informed them of the imminent closure of the Barclaycard online servicing on June 10, 2026. The email emphasized that though unexpected, the change will not impact account usage or card functionality. Customers were encouraged to continue utilizing the Barclaycard app for managing their accounts, citing the growing trend of customers opting for app-based banking services.

Some customers have expressed dissatisfaction on social media platforms, highlighting concerns over the increasing reliance on apps and the closure of traditional banking services. In response, a Barclays spokesperson clarified that after a review, the dedicated Barclaycard website will be phased out in favor of account servicing through Barclays online banking. This transition will occur gradually, ensuring no disruption to online banking access for regular users. Customers will retain the ability to apply for new cards or manage existing accounts through the Barclaycard or Barclays apps, telephone banking, or in-branch services.

Barclays’ strategic shift comes following reports from The Times indicating plans to reintroduce physical branches and personal banking services. Vim Maru, Barclays UK’s CEO, emphasized the importance of providing personalized assistance to customers, highlighting the limitations of automated chat services. Despite the closure of over 800 branches since 2018, Barclays remains committed to enhancing customer service through a blend of digital convenience and personalized support.

In an effort to provide differentiated customer experiences, Barclays aims to combine digital efficiency with personalized interactions, reintroducing the role of branch managers to cater to customers’ needs for human assistance. The reemergence of bank managers signifies Barclays’ commitment to balancing digital innovation with traditional customer service values, ensuring customers have access to both digital convenience and personalized support.
