A visitor required urgent medical attention after being stung by one of the most poisonous creatures globally, capable of causing death in less than five minutes. Guy Rowles, hailing from Australia, encountered the incident while surfing in Fiji on the initial day of his vacation. While in the water with his father, Rowles experienced a sharp sting on his arm, prompting him to remove the jellyfish tentacles.

The surfer, who was at Sujees Surf Stay at Cloudbreak, a renowned reef break in the Mamanuca Islands known for its waves, described the intense pain he felt on his arm as akin to scalding hot oil being poured on him. Subsequently, he exhibited symptoms such as a burning sensation, chest tightness, and convulsions upon being rescued onto a boat deck.

Rowles was swiftly transported to a hospital in Nadi, located more than an hour away from the site of the incident. Despite feeling severe discomfort and uncertainty about his condition, he managed to reach out to his mother before being taken to the hospital.

The medical team treated Rowles by using vinegar to counteract any remaining venom and tentacles from the jellyfish. Fortunately, despite the grave nature of the injury, he survived the attack. Reflecting on the incident, Rowles remarked on how the experience had offered him a fresh perspective.

Box jellyfish, distinguished by their box-like shape, possess tentacles that can extend up to 10 feet, adorned with venom-filled harpoons. These marine creatures have the capability to fatally sting a person within a brief span of five minutes, primarily inhabiting the Indo-Pacific region and northern Australia.

Before Rowles’ encounter, the Fijian government had issued a health advisory about the presence of jellyfish in the waters, cautioning individuals to be vigilant and seek medical assistance if necessary. This alert was prompted by incidents where individuals exhibited breathing difficulties after encountering the Box Jellyfish at sea.
