Saltdean Lido, an iconic seaside pool in Brighton, narrowly escaped redevelopment into flats and has now evolved into a pet-friendly destination. Built in 1937, this Art Deco gem faced closure but was saved by a dedicated campaign to preserve it as a swimming spot.

After a meticulous £11 million restoration project, unveiled in 2024, Saltdean Lido stands as the only Grade II* listed coastal lido in the UK, retaining many of its original 1930s elements. The refurbishment encompassed the revival of the lido’s amenities like the cafe, library, ballroom, and offices. Beyond the 40-meter outdoor pool, visitors can enjoy relaxation areas, yoga sessions, live music, a gym, sauna, exercise classes, and event spaces for special occasions.

Operating from May 1 to September 10 this year, Saltdean Lido remains open during winter with reduced hours. However, the highlight is Dogtember, a series of dog-friendly swimming sessions held on selected weekends in early autumn, attracting dog owners nationwide. The fenced area allows dogs to roam freely off-leash. Dogtember sessions for this year are scheduled on September 12 and 13, as well as October 3 and 4, with tickets set to go on sale on May 1.

Funded by the National Lottery and community contributions, the lido’s renovation was a community effort that delighted volunteers and visitors alike. Situated just outside bustling Brighton, Saltdean offers a serene coastal village ambiance, boasting shingle shores, majestic white cliffs, expansive green spaces like Saltdean Park, and easy access to the tranquil Sussex Downs countryside. The area features a quaint high street with independent shops, cozy tearooms, and spots to savor classic fish and chips by the seafront.
