Spanish Tourism Minister Jordi Hereu has advised British travelers who have not yet finalized their summer vacation plans to secure their flight bookings promptly to avoid potential price fluctuations. According to Hereu, the tourism industry’s growth could be impacted by increasing flight costs. Spain, which welcomed 97 million tourists last year, was anticipated to reach the 100 million milestone this year.
Hereu emphasized the importance of purchasing tickets early due to current price variations stemming from airlines using previously acquired kerosene. He noted that the rising prices could potentially affect travel demand. However, measures are being explored to mitigate fuel shortages ahead of the busy summer season.
The Minister also cautioned that any issues affecting countries sending tourists to Spain could have corresponding repercussions. Several airlines have faced flight cancellations during the spring and summer due to elevated jet fuel costs resulting from dwindling supplies following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz post the Israeli and US actions in Iran.
Amid efforts to reopen the Strait, UK officials expressed concern over possible prolonged consequences. Keir Starmer mentioned that further impacts might lead to changes in consumer behavior, including holiday destination choices and shopping habits.
Virgin Atlantic’s CEO, Corneel Koster, highlighted the unprecedented surge in jet fuel prices, stressing the industry’s inability to absorb such drastic cost hikes. Recent reports indicate a significant spike in jet fuel costs, with airlines witnessing a substantial rise in operating expenses, impacting their profitability.
Economy ticket prices have surged by an average of 24% compared to last year, prompting airlines to seek relief measures like a reduction in Air Passenger Duty to alleviate the financial burden on travelers. Airlines like Lufthansa have already made service cuts, including the cancellation of thousands of short-haul flights to conserve jet fuel. Affected customers are being offered alternatives such as refunds or rebooking on other carriers.
