A teacher at an elite boarding school with an annual tuition fee of £46,000 has been prohibited from teaching following an incident where he inundated a teenage student with inappropriate late-night messages.

James Samson, aged 46 and a father of two, who served as the head of geography and a form tutor at Luckley House School in Berkshire, sent multiple texts and emails to the female student after obtaining her contact details a year earlier.

The messages included suggestive comments such as, “Shame I couldn’t get you back into my cupboard… To find a folder,” and “I was just looking at you and not listening to [Person X] anyway.” Additionally, Samson invited the student to his room for revision, expressing enjoyment in her presence.

A disciplinary inquiry revealed that Samson communicated with the student through WhatsApp, email, and texts over a span of several months, including late-night messages on holidays, which violated school regulations.

The student described the messages as strange and unprofessional, causing her discomfort and suspicion about the teacher’s intentions.

Following an investigation prompted by concerns raised in June 2024, Samson was terminated from his position at the school about a month later. Witnesses highlighted the concerning nature of the messages, indicating potential grooming behavior.

The school’s disciplinary panel concluded that Samson’s actions crossed professional boundaries, labeling his conduct as highly inappropriate and falling significantly short of expected standards. The panel emphasized the school policy prohibiting staff from sharing personal contact information with students and emphasized the importance of communication through official channels only.

The panel’s report emphasized that Samson’s behavior, including seeking and utilizing the student’s phone number for personal correspondence outside school hours, constituted serious misconduct and a breach of professional standards.
