A seasoned pilot with over 750 flights under his belt and visits to more than 50 countries in just four years has disclosed a European city frequently overlooked by vacationers.

When planning a sunny getaway, many of us seek destinations that are slightly off the beaten path. Whether it’s to avoid tourist crowds, busy attractions, and long lines, or simply to meander through a quieter locale and discover something new.

There are numerous picturesque European cities teeming with charisma and allure that are worth exploring beyond the usual tourist hubs. However, it can be challenging to decide where to go. Fortunately, Wizz Air pilot Tom Copestake has a specific recommendation for holidaymakers.

In an exclusive interview with the Mirror, Tom shared, “I recently landed in Bilbao – a fantastic destination on the northern coast. The surrounding mountains or hills offer excellent hiking opportunities. Northern Spain boasts great walking routes.”

He further mentioned, “I conversed with the ground handling agent in Bilbao, who praised the area’s beauty and urged us to stay and explore. Nearby is San Sebastiá, which is said to be a remarkable place worth visiting.”

Bilbao, situated in northern Spain, is a vibrant port city characterized by lush green mountains and a meandering river valley. Renowned for its Basque heritage, innovative architecture, and world-class art scene, the city is home to the iconic Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Gehry, renowned for its contemporary art displays and the towering ‘Puppy’ sculpture overlooking the city. Amidst its modern structures lies the historic Casco Viejo old town, featuring ancient medieval streets, the majestic Santiago Cathedral, and Mercado de la Ribera – one of Europe’s largest covered food markets.

The city boasts a thriving culinary scene, with local tapas, known as pintxos, and fresh seafood being popular highlights. Bilbao is dotted with lively bars, bustling restaurants, and cozy cafes, allowing visitors to savor the delectable local cuisine and immerse themselves in the vibrant ambiance.

Beyond the Guggenheim Museum, notable attractions include the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao, the ‘White Bridge’ (Zubizuri Bridge), and the Artxanda Funicular, offering breathtaking mountain views. Nearby, the Bizkaia Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the first to carry both people and traffic on a high suspended gondola.

With Wizz Air introducing new routes from London Luton to Bilbao this year, starting at £26.99, it’s an opportune time to visit. The airline has also added several new Spanish routes, including Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, and Seville.

Reflecting on his role as a pilot and his recommendation of Bilbao, Tom expressed, “This is essentially a customer service role within the aviation industry, and I appreciate that each of the thousands of passengers I’ve flown has a unique story and purpose for traveling. Whether for leisure, family visits, or work abroad, every journey is special to me. It’s a privilege to do this job.”
