Next week, the payment date for certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, will be advanced for many individuals due to the upcoming May bank holiday on Monday, May 4. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) does not make benefit payments on bank holidays, so beneficiaries will receive their payments on the previous working day.
If you are expecting a benefit payment on Monday, May 4, you should receive it on Friday, May 1 instead. Similarly, for the bank holiday on Monday, May 25, payments will be made early on Friday, May 22 for those scheduled to receive benefits on that date.
While receiving payments early provides a financial boost, it also means a longer gap until the next payment. The payment amount will remain unchanged unless there have been alterations in personal circumstances. This adjustment will also affect certain HMRC benefits, including Child Benefit.
The frequency of benefit payments varies depending on the type of benefit claimed. For instance, Universal Credit is paid on the same day each month, while Child Benefit is typically disbursed every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday. Notably, Universal Credit has replaced several other benefits such as Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits, and Housing Benefit.
Beneficiaries are advised to carefully monitor their bank accounts to ensure payments are received as scheduled. If a payment is missing, contacting the relevant helpline is recommended, though bear in mind that these services may not be available on bank holidays, necessitating a wait until the next working day.
