Vonn was airlifted to a medical facility while participating in the downhill event in Italy. Following multiple surgeries, she was initially released to return to the United States for further medical care. In a poignant Instagram post, Vonn detailed her injuries, including compartment syndrome and a fractured ankle, praising her surgeon for saving her leg.

During an Instagram video, Vonn explained the complexity of her injuries, highlighting compartment syndrome’s impact on her body tissues. She credited Dr. Tom Hackett for performing a fasciotomy that prevented amputation. Expressing gratitude for her surgeon’s six-hour surgery, Vonn emphasized her fortune in the situation and her positive outlook on recovery.

Vonn disclosed the reasons for her extended hospital stay, attributing it to low hemoglobin levels and the need for a blood transfusion. Currently wheelchair-bound due to a broken ankle, she anticipates transitioning to crutches in the near future. Despite a lengthy recovery process ahead, Vonn remains optimistic and committed to rehabilitation, outlining potential future surgeries for complete healing.

In a message accompanying the video, Vonn expressed relief at leaving the hospital after a challenging two-week period.
