A British traveler finds himself stranded in a foreign country following a motorbike accident just three hours into his journey, all due to a minor oversight in his travel insurance coverage.

Alex Muncey, aged 33, embarked on what was supposed to be a ten-week “trip of a lifetime” in Colombo, Sri Lanka, only to have his dream abruptly shattered on the first day. While en route from the airport to his accommodation, he was involved in a collision with a lorry while riding a rented 250cc bike, sustaining severe injuries including a brain bleed, three fractures in his right arm, and four fractures in his right leg.

Hailing from Cambridgeshire, the Briton’s loved ones are now rallying to bring him back home as his insurance policy surprisingly only covered motorbikes up to 125cc, as reported by CambridgeshireLive.

Alex’s partner, Helen Garrod, lamented the situation, expressing devastation at the turn of events. Recounting the events leading to the accident, she revealed that Alex had barely begun his journey when the collision occurred, leaving him in a critical state. The family was alarmed when Alex failed to reach his hostel, and the subsequent phone call revealed his deteriorating condition.

Photos from the hospital depict the self-employed builder immobilized in plaster with metal pins inserted into his leg. He has undergone surgery to fit an external fixator and is scheduled for further procedures, including a skin and muscle graft.

In a bid to cover the escalating medical expenses and repatriation costs, Helen and Alex’s family have initiated a GoFundMe campaign, with estimates suggesting the total expenses could soar to £40,000.

Helen disclosed that Alex, a seasoned motorcyclist with nine years of experience and a full license, believed he was adequately insured for any activity, including riding a motorbike. However, the insurance limitation has left him financially burdened, with the cost of a medically staffed flight back home alone ranging from £30,000 to £40,000, exclusive of surgical expenses.

For those willing to support Alex’s cause, donations can be made through the fundraiser set up by his family.
