A mother of three from Gaza shared the harrowing moment she discovered her residence had been obliterated in an Israeli bombing incident. Alaa Radwan managed to escape Palestine in 2024 due to frequent airstrikes near their temporary lodging. Currently residing in Egypt, her family plans to relocate to the UK in a few months to facilitate her pursuit of a Master’s degree in London.
Upon learning of the destruction of their home, Alaa recounted how a neighbor sent a photo revealing the devastation. Just months before the tragic events on October 7, Alaa and her spouse had recently paid off their home, which they described as “a truly beautiful dwelling.” Despite their successful early achievement of homeownership at the age of 30, a rarity in Gaza where owning a home typically occurs much later in life, their abode was decimated.
The Israeli military instructed Alaa and her family to evacuate the premises on her birthday, October 13. They were relocated to Deir Al-balah in the heart of the Gaza Strip, where the entire family, including three young children, shared a single room for safety during the turbulent times.
Following a distressing six-week displacement, Alaa received the dreaded news through a WhatsApp group that their home had been bombed. Subsequent images of the ruined apartment showcased a stark contrast to its former state, with the once-furnished space now in ruins.
Expressing her devastation, Alaa mentioned her attachment to belongings but acknowledged a shift in perspective post-tragedy. Subsequently, a perilous incident involving a neighboring house being bombed compelled the family to flee to Egypt, where they had to start anew having lost their home, jobs, and connections in Gaza.
Despite the ordeal, Alaa looks forward to a brighter future as she secured a place at Goldsmith’s University in London for a Master’s degree in Media and Communications. Through a successful GoFundMe campaign, they garnered adequate funds to kickstart their fresh journey, emphasizing the irreparable changes in Gaza’s landscape and community.
Reflecting on the past, Alaa expressed a sense of loss for the vibrant life they once had in Gaza, noting the stark differences in their present circumstances.
