In the United States, a popular destination for lost luggage is the Unclaimed Baggage warehouse located in Scottsboro, Alabama. “We do not sell items that have had direct skin contact,” stated Sonni Hood, the public relations manager at the store, who runs the shop with her cousin Adam. This policy means that items like sex toys, diaries, human ashes, used cosmetics, and firearms are discarded.
“We thoroughly inspect every item to ensure there are no hazardous, dangerous, or overly embarrassing contents,” Sonni elaborated. “Thrift stores are filled with items people want to discard, but the items we have are cherished possessions that travelers wanted to bring along on their trips.”
Among the most peculiar finds in 2026 was a fully assembled robot, with its purpose remaining a mystery, though it appears to be a sophisticated research project. Other unusual discoveries included a large stuffed goose, a frog-shaped handbag, and a complete artificial skeleton.
Valuable items have also surfaced at the facility, such as a pair of diamond earrings valued at $43,000 (£32,000) in 2026. High-end items like Rolexes, pricey camera gear, and designer handbags were among the valuable discoveries.
The report also detailed the most common items found in lost luggage, with men’s t-shirts topping the list at over 200,000 in 2026. Additionally, the facility accumulated 128,000 pairs of trousers, over 57,000 jewelry pieces, more than 51,000 mobile phones, and in excess of 48,000 pairs of shoes misplaced by their owners.
Fashion-related discoveries included a striking beauty pageant outfit from a Miss Dakota competition, a lynx fur coat, a Dolce & Gabbana jeweled jacket, and a Hermès Herbag Zip 31 handbag valued at up to £3,000.
International discoveries featured items like a Tibetan singing bowl, African masks, and Polynesian ceremonial attire lost by globetrotters. Historical artifacts included a 1945 army magazine about the Japan occupation, a nuclear radiation detector, and a 1957 letter addressed to Marilyn Monroe.
The report also recounted intriguing anecdotes about purchased and sold items, like stumbling upon a suitcase packed with rat poison or selling a bubble-wrapped item for a bargain, only to discover it was a valuable 1930s art deco statue.
Past years have witnessed even more peculiar finds, including a jar of whiskey containing a preserved rattlesnake and an antique French book detailing exorcism procedures.
One particularly weighty bag aroused the team’s curiosity, but upon inspection, it merely contained rocks. Whether it was a geologist’s collection or a clever packing strategy, the true intention behind the bag’s contents remains a mystery.
