Cutting Room Square in Ancoats, Manchester, has secured the 21st spot on TimeOut’s Coolest Streets in the World 2022 list, marking the first time Manchester has been recognized in this prestigious ranking. Surpassing renowned streets like MacDougal Street in New York, Cutting Room Square’s rise to fame has sparked mixed reactions among locals.

Ancoats, once celebrated as the world’s first industrial suburb during the Industrial Revolution, has undergone a remarkable transformation following years of neglect post-war and the decline of UK manufacturing. The area now thrives as a vibrant neighborhood, attracting residents to its converted red-brick buildings and visitors to its top-notch dining establishments.

Home to popular eateries like Rudy’s and Elnecot, Cutting Room Square also boasts prominent bars and restaurants such as Erst and Mana, Manchester’s first Michelin-starred restaurant in over four decades. The backdrop of the restored Grade II-listed Hallé St Peter’s church adds to the area’s charm, complemented by distinctive copper monoliths.

Local residents and business owners express pride in Ancoats’ revitalization, noting the area’s evolution into a cultural hotspot with a strong community spirit. The recent pedestrianization trial by Manchester City Council, temporarily closing the square to vehicles, has further enhanced the neighborhood’s appeal, creating a European ambiance that resonates with visitors.

While some embrace Cutting Room Square’s newfound status as a trendy destination, others, like resident Maisie, remain skeptical, questioning the exclusivity and rapid gentrification of the area. Suggestions for enhancing the neighborhood’s vibrancy include introducing live music events, art installations, and more community-oriented activities.

TimeOut’s selection process for the Coolest Streets list involved a global survey of city residents nominating their favorite streets, with criteria such as food, drink, culture, and community vibes factored in by local editors. Among the UK streets recognized are Glasgow’s Great Western Road and London’s Deptford High Street, each embodying a unique blend of history and modernity.
