The US, under President Donald Trump’s leadership, has declared a ‘blockade’ of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that the US military will take action to prevent ships from entering or leaving the strategic passage. Following unsuccessful peace talks between the US and Iran in Pakistan, tensions have escalated, leading to the announcement of the naval blockade.

President Trump mentioned the involvement of unspecified “other countries” in the blockade, excluding the UK. Meanwhile, the UK government expressed support for freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz to sustain global economic activities and domestic living standards, emphasizing the need to prevent tolling in the region.

Efforts are underway to establish a coalition with France and other allies to safeguard freedom of navigation in the strait. Despite positive outcomes in negotiations in Islamabad, disagreements persist, particularly concerning Iran’s nuclear capabilities, a point vehemently opposed by the US president.

Iran’s closure of the Strait, a critical route for 20% of the world’s oil trade, has led to soaring fuel prices globally since the conflict erupted. Trump condemned Iran for failing to reopen the strait as promised, leading to disruptions and hardships worldwide.

The US Navy has commenced the process of enforcing the blockade, aiming to eventually restore free passage in the strait. Trump warned against any vessels paying illegal tolls to Iran, affirming military action against such ships and potential resistance. He reiterated that Iran is losing the war and emphasized US readiness to address any further threats posed by Iran.
