The family of a beloved chef, described as a “gentle giant,” is expressing disappointment over the jail term handed down to the individual responsible for his death. Cemal John Yilmaz, aged 29, tragically passed away after being struck by Royal Marine Commando Joseph Jones, 22, in a shocking incident while socializing with friends in Exmouth, Devon. Originally from Manchester, Cemal was knocked unconscious by a swift punch to his chin during a celebratory night out for marines at local establishments.

Yilmaz’s family is seeking justice following Jones being sentenced to three and a half years in prison for manslaughter. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, his parents, Ann and Ozkan, are pursuing an appeal against the leniency of the sentence and raising awareness about the grave consequences of single-punch incidents. Ann recounted the heart-wrenching experience of losing her son, emphasizing the devastating impact on their lives.

Describing the fatal encounter, Ann explained that Cemal innocently engaged in conversation with Jones, only to be struck without warning, resulting in severe injuries leading to his untimely death. Despite immediate medical attention, Cemal succumbed to his injuries days later at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Known for his selfless and positive demeanor, Cemal’s family is struggling to come to terms with his loss, particularly in light of the sentence imposed on Jones. The marine turned himself in to authorities the day after the incident, eventually admitting to manslaughter. Jones was given a three-and-a-half-year sentence, of which he must serve two years and four months before potential release on parole.

Expressing their dismay over the sentencing outcome, Ann condemned the perceived leniency and called for stricter penalties for such violent acts. She emphasized the need for justice and accountability, urging for measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

In response to the family’s efforts, an online petition has been launched to challenge the sentence length and raise awareness about Cemal’s untimely passing. Garnering over 4,000 signatures, the petition aims to seek justice for Cemal and prevent other families from enduring similar losses.
