Banksy’s earliest remaining creation might soon be available for art enthusiasts, as the building it embellishes in Bristol is preparing to be sold. The property, home to Wellspring Settlement, a vital community hub, has been facing financial challenges, prompting the decision to put it on the market. This site, once known as the ‘Dug Out’ youth club and frequented by the enigmatic artist during his early days, holds significant historical value.

Wellspring Settlement is a cornerstone of the Barton Hill neighborhood, offering a range of services such as baby and toddler activities, a food club, financial counseling, and social gatherings for adults. Additionally, the center supports youth initiatives and provides space for various local charities and groups.

Having nurtured a young Banksy before he rose to fame as the world’s most renowned anonymous artist, the community center’s sale signifies the end of its legacy in fostering Bristol’s youth and marks a piece of art history changing hands. Presently, the large Barton Hill building accommodates a local amateur boxing club, which will need to relocate upon the property’s transfer.

In a sincere message to Barton Hill residents, Wellspring expressed their financial situation. The charity highlighted the challenges they face, including the building’s maintenance costs surpassing the rent paid by the boxing club that has been housed there for a decade.

To address financial risks, trustees have decided to list the building for sale to seek potential buyers, aiming to stabilize their finances and ensure long-term sustainability. Despite the sale, the commitment to supporting the boxing club remains firm, with efforts underway to find suitable alternative premises for its operations.

Acknowledging the community’s attachment to the building, Wellspring pledges transparency throughout the transition, with optimism about securing a future for both the charity and the boxing club. For more information, interested parties are encouraged to contact info@wsb.org.uk.
