The majority of welfare payments, including Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payments, are scheduled to increase today. These payments typically undergo an annual adjustment based on the previous September’s inflation rate, which stood at 3.8%.

Notably, the Universal Credit standard allowance will see a 6.2% rise, surpassing the inflation rate. However, due to the monthly arrears payment structure of Universal Credit, beneficiaries will experience the higher rate reflected in their May or June disbursements.

Universal Credit has replaced six older benefits, which include Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Housing Benefit.

In other news, the state pension is set to increase by 4.8% as per the triple lock promise, ensuring that the pension rises each April by either the highest of inflation, wage growth, or 2.5%.

Most benefit payments are administered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), except for Child Benefit, which is managed by HMRC. The new rates are expected to take effect from Monday, April 6. For Universal Credit claimants, the higher payments will be noticeable in the May or June payment cycles due to the arrears payment system.

There are various premiums available based on individual circumstances, affecting the rates for different benefits and components. It is essential to stay informed about the updates and changes in benefit payments to ensure accurate financial planning.
