The Defense Minister has dismissed claims that the United States warned the United Kingdom of potential repercussions for not meeting expectations during the Iran conflict.
Luke Pollard, the Minister responsible for Defense Readiness and Industry, stated that the UK Government does not acknowledge reports suggesting that the US President threatened the UK with a review to determine if it should face consequences for not supporting the US in its conflict with Iran.
Alleged plans by President Trump to penalize and reward NATO members are still under discussion, with one possibility being the withdrawal of American troops from countries considered less supportive, as reported by The Times.
President Trump has consistently criticized the NATO alliance, comprising 32 countries from Europe and North America, during the Iran conflict. He recently criticized NATO for perceived inaction in assisting the US.
Responding to the reports, Mr. Pollard indicated that the UK does not recognize such actions, emphasizing that the conflict in Iran is not the UK’s own, but the UK has increased support to defend allies from Iranian attacks on British, coalition bases, and allies in the Gulf.
In addition, Mr. Pollard highlighted the importance of NATO solidarity, stating that NATO is stronger with the inclusion of the United States and other partners. He emphasized the need to reinforce the case for NATO and collective action in response to challenges set by President Trump.
Mr. Pollard announced a new multimillion-pound missile contract for drone interceptors to counter Iranian threats, mentioning the deployment of Royal Navy minehunters to support the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
