A brave mother, who had been searching for a kidney donor for over five years, has sadly passed away. Claire Boland, residing in Stockport, Greater Manchester, experienced a severe brain hemorrhage leading to her demise on April 4. Despite her rare blood type, with odds of finding a suitable match at two in 10,000, she had expressed her loss of hope in the quest for a donor last year.

Despite efforts from friends, family, and loved ones to be tested, no compatible donor was found. Claire suffered the brain bleed while at a bingo outing with her mother and best friend. The connection between the brain bleed and her previous health issues is yet to be confirmed.

Survived by her husband Damien, and daughters Ileana, aged two, and Elodie, aged 13, along with her extended family, Claire’s story was reported by the Manchester Evening News. Claire’s struggle with health began at the age of eight when she was diagnosed with type one diabetes. This condition led to extended hospital stays during her childhood.

Around seven years ago, she developed end-stage kidney failure, which necessitated strenuous treatments like haemodialysis, iron transfusions, and frequent medical appointments for managing high blood pressure, in addition to her diabetes management. Claire, speaking in November, emphasized the mental strain caused by the uncertainties surrounding her health, impacting her family life significantly.

Despite a public plea for a donor just five months prior, a suitable match was never found. Claire’s mother, Deborah Kershaw, recounted the events leading to her daughter’s sudden deterioration, which culminated in the fatal brain bleed.

Medical investigations revealed a quick and catastrophic bleed at the back of Claire’s brain, preventing any possible intervention due to the location and severity of the bleeding. The decision was made to withdraw sedation and ventilation on March 31, with Claire bravely fighting for four more days before passing on April 4.

In memory of Claire, her family has launched a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses and provide support to Damien and their daughters. Deborah fondly remembered Claire as a resilient and selfless individual, always maintaining a positive outlook on life despite her health challenges.

Claire’s ultimate wish was to have a kidney transplant to enable her to travel and create lasting memories with her daughters. Her family, devastated by the sudden loss, is rallying around Damien and the children, seeking support to navigate through this difficult time.
