An accomplished ultra-marathon runner met a tragic end while taking on a demanding 234-mile challenge in the rugged Highlands. David Parrish, aged 35, was discovered deceased in a secluded mountainous region of Kintail on Saturday evening around 10:25 pm. Hailing from Dumfries, he aimed to set a new record for the fastest male completion of the Cape Wrath trail.

Initially planning to run the trail over the Easter weekend, David postponed his attempt due to unfavorable weather conditions, later resuming the challenge. He dedicated his journey to his late friend, Luke, who had passed away during a mountain run 11 years earlier.

Following his untimely demise, heartfelt tributes flooded in online. One friend expressed, “David not only leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of accomplishments but also a memory of carrying immense strength with grace. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace.”

Another tribute read, “A truly remarkable individual with an incredibly positive perspective on life. You will be deeply missed.” Additionally, someone remarked, “You will be remembered and deeply missed. A fantastic colleague, a supportive friend, and an exceptional leader.”

Another close friend added, “I feel privileged to have known you and shared trails with you. You were always kind, gracious, and humorous. Your absence will be felt by all.”

David had undertaken the route to raise funds for Scottish Mountain Rescue and in memory of Luke Ireland, who tragically lost his life while running in the mountains near Glen Clova. David, who had previously won the Cape Wrath Trail race in 2023 with the second-fastest time ever recorded for the event, despite only a few years of competitive running experience.

The Cape Wrath Trail, known as one of the UK’s toughest routes, commences in Fort William and traverses Scotland’s stunning landscapes, including Knoydart, Kintail, Torridon, Assynt, and Sutherland. David had mentioned feeling ‘exhausted and battered’ after completing the trail three years ago but vowed to return someday.

Photographed during the 2023 Cape Wrath event by No Limits Photography, David was remembered fondly by the company’s owners, Harriet D’Alessio and Christiaan Le Roux. They described him as a joyful individual and an inspiring ultra-marathon athlete, stating, “The world and the sport will greatly miss him.”

A member of the Dumfries Running Club and the club champion in 2022, David, a former Royal Marine, began his running journey in his late teens, gradually transitioning to competitive races in his early 20s, participating in various local 5km and 10km events.

After leaving the armed forces, he delved into competitive running, citing it as a means to unwind from the pressures of life in the infantry. Police Scotland has been contacted for further details.
