Balancing screen time and quality family moments can be a daily challenge, especially as kids use devices for various activities like learning, gaming, and socializing. Defining a reasonable screen time limit can be tricky in this digital age.

In an effort to promote open discussions on online safety within families, The Family Chat campaign, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, is ongoing throughout 2026. Author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher is engaging with parents and kids to address online challenges and the support provided by Tesco Mobile’s online safety tools.

A downloadable family pledge is among the resources offered, allowing families to commit to healthy screen time practices and ensuring children’s online safety. Giovanna emphasizes the importance of regularly reassessing screen time rules, sharing her family’s approach of not letting phone usage become a primary activity, especially for younger kids.

For the Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their teenagers Joshua, Isaac, and Ruby, phones are vital for connectivity, schoolwork, and managing their busy schedules. To promote a positive conversation around screen time, the family participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge, engaging in activities that included prioritizing screen and offline activities.

After completing the challenges, the Karleys pledged to implement their learnings by filling out Tesco Mobile’s family pledge, focusing on screen time boundaries and privacy practices. They plan to leverage Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub for expert guidance to strike a balance between digital engagement and real-world interactions.

Implementing a phones-down rule at 9.30 pm, the Karleys aim to enhance their family time by engaging in shared activities like quizzes. By displaying their family pledge prominently and committing to it, they are embarking on a fresh start towards a more balanced digital lifestyle.

Tips for spotting reliable online content include avoiding sensational headlines, checking for spelling errors or suspicious websites, verifying information from multiple sources, and guiding kids on how to authenticate social media accounts. Encouraging fact-checking activities together can also enhance digital literacy and critical thinking skills.
