Residents in a small Kent community are experiencing severe health issues, including vomiting, insomnia, and watery eyes, due to an overpowering sewage odor originating from a nearby estate. The locals in Chestfield, near Whitstable, have reported unbearable living conditions caused by the foul smell coming from the Oxenden Park development. The waste management system in the area, which transfers waste to the wider sewer network and Swalecliffe Wastewater Treatment Works, is malfunctioning due to low property occupancy rates, leading to stagnant wastewater in local pipes.
Among the affected residents is Celena Campbell, 71, who highlighted the detrimental effects of the odor on mental health, with some individuals even falling physically ill. Despite attempts to address the issue, such as temporary fixes and chemical treatments by developers Bellway, the problem persists. A group of residents recently staged a protest at the estate on April 12 to draw attention to the situation.
One resident, Mandy Friend, expressed the challenges of dealing with the smell, mentioning the need for excessive cleaning measures and masking techniques to mitigate its impact. Bellway has acknowledged the issue and assured residents that efforts are underway to implement a temporary solution to restore normal sewage flow promptly. The company emphasized its commitment to resolving the matter swiftly in collaboration with technical teams and contractors.
The affected community is eagerly awaiting a resolution to the ongoing sewage smell issue, which has significantly disrupted their daily lives.
