The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that North Korea has significantly advanced its nuclear weapons production capabilities. This development coincides with heightened concerns about nuclear warfare, particularly in the Middle East due to alleged Iranian nuclear activities, according to US assertions.

It is estimated that North Korea has amassed around 50 nuclear warheads, although doubts exist regarding its ability to miniaturize them for use on long-range ballistic missiles. Rafael Grossi, the Head of IAEA, confirmed the surge in activity at North Korea’s main nuclear complex, Yongbyon, during a recent visit to Seoul, South Korea.

North Korea is believed to possess multiple nuclear warheads and has been steadily enhancing its nuclear arsenal under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, in defiance of international sanctions. This buildup is perceived as a strategic move to deter potential regime change efforts by the US.

Recent assessments by a US thinktank indicate that North Korea has completed construction of a uranium enrichment facility at Yongbyon, potentially expanding its nuclear weapons capacity. Despite not conducting nuclear tests since 2017, North Korea continues to advance its missile technology and increase its weapons stockpile, aligning with Kim’s commitment to rapidly expand its nuclear capabilities.

Efforts to curb North Korea’s nuclear ambitions through diplomatic channels have faced setbacks, marked by failed summits between Kim and former US President Donald Trump, and strained relations with South Korea. The IAEA has condemned North Korea’s nuclear program as a violation of UN security council resolutions and remains prepared to monitor and verify its nuclear activities.
