President Trump is increasing pressure on Iran ahead of potential upcoming discussions by deploying additional troops to the Middle East. The President mentioned the possibility of a new round of talks with Iran within the next two days. The talks are being arranged through diplomatic channels in Islamabad.

The US Central Command reported that no ships passed the blockade in the initial 24 hours, with six merchant vessels complying with US directives to return to Iranian waters. Reports indicate that over 10,000 more troops could soon arrive in the region, including 6,000 on the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier and accompanying warships. Additionally, around 4,200 troops from the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit are expected by the end of the month.

Currently, there are approximately 50,000 US troops in the Middle East, with the additional military reinforcement coinciding with the expiration of a two-week ceasefire on April 22. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz aims to exert pressure on Iran, which has been exporting significant volumes of oil to Asia during the conflict.

Since the conflict began, Iran has restricted maritime traffic, leading to a rise in oil prices globally. This increase has impacted the costs of essential goods in the Middle East. Regional officials have indicated that the US and Iran have tentatively agreed to extend the ceasefire to facilitate further diplomatic efforts.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed optimism about the resumption of talks, following discussions with Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Pakistan is actively involved in mediating potential negotiations. Additionally, Pakistan’s Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia and attend the Anatalya Peace Forum in Turkey to push for diplomatic solutions.
